Must Love Cats

Madeline Adkins Hired as Utah Symphony Concertmaster
Utah doesn’t yet know Madeline Adkins, but she is being warmly welcomed to the Utah Symphony community, despite the anxiety following the demotion of her predecessor, Ralph Matson. Adkins will become the symphony’s concertmaster in the 2016-17 season.

Movie Reviews: In the Heart of the Sea, Janis: Little Girl Lost, Macbeth

It's the calm before the Star Wars storm, as few movies risk getting Force-choked at the box office. MaryAnn Johanson admires In the Heart of the Sea (pictured) turning the true story that inspired Moby Dick into a tale of nascent environmental awareness.

Local Releases: Dark Rock & Compilations Abound

Sugar Space: Cameo

Briefly chatting with Nick Blaylock before Friday night's performance.
As 2015 slowly comes to a close,  performing arts companies and spaces draw their seasons shut for the first half, and prepare for the second half to kick off in January. Biskupski's Transition Funding Shot Down

An ordinance that would have given taxpayer money to help finance transitions into public office of newly elected Salt Lake City mayors and city council members won’t go into effect until the 2017 election cycle. The need for such an ordinance came into focus shortly after Mayor-elect Jackie Biskupski sealed her victory in November, saying she needed $25,000 to pay for her transition into city hall.

It's a Start

SLC Council chops campaign-donation limits.
On the heels of a mayoral election that saw a pair of Salt Lake City candidates blow through $1.6 million, the Salt Lake City Council on Tuesday chopped the amount of money donors can give to city campaigns. But the changes, which halved the total amount that can be given by single donors to city council candidates from $1,500 to $750, and sliced the total available to mayoral candidates from $7,500 to $3,500, fell short of instituting the tough reforms that many hoped to see.

Wine Wednesday: Wacky, Weird Insolia

Recently, I was browsing through the section of Italian white wines at my local wine shop, trying to find something that my wife might enjoy. She's a big fan of Italian Gavi, but she's already tasted just about everything available in these parts.

The Happy Valley Podcast

Skyping about comedy and Utah culture in this locally made podcast.
We've seen a lot of new podcasts over the past year or so. Many of them are just barely finding their footing, others have been dropping off, as you usually expect to see with shows that are unsure of where they're going.

Monday Meal: Oven-Roasted Cornish Game Hens

I really love Cornish game hens and this recipe results in hens with crispy skins, but moist and tender meat. The secret is to split the hens in half for quicker cooking and in the herb rub applied beforehand.
