Bill Proposes Rehiring Retired Teachers

Lawmaker sees "unretirement" as a remedy to teacher shortages.
While class sizes in Utah are ever on the rise, school districts are having a harder time finding qualified teachers willing to work in the Beehive State. Several districts are reporting severe shortages, and many have been forced to hire non-credentialed teachers before they even finish their education.

February Gallery Stroll: Brandy Sorensen

An interview and look at the artwork hanging at Vive Juicery this month.
On a surprisingly warm night, we got one of the most active winter Gallery Stroll nights I've seen in a long time: Not too hard to get around, and plenty of food carts and trucks on hand to keep those treading the pavement fed as they walked around town. This month, I made my way over to Vive Juicery on Broadway, where painter Brandy Sorensen had her latest works up for display.

15 Sights from Saturday's Protest at Willie's Lounge

Members of the Polynesian community gathered outside the bar after racial profiling incident
Carrying signs that read "Polynesian rights," and "End discrimination in Utah," members of Salt Lake City's Polynesian Community gathered last night at Watchtower Café and led a peaceful march to Willie's Lounge, where two men say they were denied service due to their cultural heritage earlier this week. The incident garnered viral attention after one of the men, Frank Maea, posted a video shot inside the bar that night on his Facebook page. “I wanted to just, kind of, raise awareness,” Maea told City Weekly.

(Un) Raising the Bar

Watering hole owner and victim of alleged racial profiling respond to attention; both will convene in “fierce” dance
It’s always a boost of hometown pride when you realize Salt Lake City is trending. Oh, never mind, it was because Frank Maea and his cousin Stephen Wily, who are of Polynesian descent, were denied service at Willie’s Lounge, the state's self-proclaimed “finest dive” due to their ethnicity.

Dueling Marijuana Bills Face Off at Legislature

Sen. Madsen's robust cannabis bill will be decided Monday
Marijuana, THC, oils, brownies, getting high and smoking doobies were all words uttered in the Utah Senate chamber on Friday as lawmakers debated a pair of medical marijuana bills. One of them, Senate Bill 89, received a favorable vote from the Senate, while the more robust of the bills, Sen. Mark Madsen’s Senate Bill 73, underwent some vigorous and emotional debate before being tabled until Monday.

Movie Reviews: Risen, Race, The Witch, The Lady in the Van, Ip Man 3

Period-piece stories are the focus at theaters this weekend, as new releases take us to 1st century Judea, 17th century New England, 1930s Berlin and 1950s Hong Kong. Risen (pictured) tells the Biblical story of Jesus' resurrection through a first half that's fascinating when it's about a miracle as a political problem, but less compelling when it's a re-telling of Acts of the Apostles.

House Passes Bill Requiring Techs to Report Child Porn

Bill mandating reporting passes despite some opposition.
The Utah House of Representatives approved a bill Wednesday morning that requires computer technicians who discover child pornography in the course of their work report the discovery to law enforcement. But some lawmakers who voted no argue that the bill should really be called the “Rat On Your Neighbor” bill.
