BYU TV airs doc on foundation that helps prisoners' children

Karl Winsness has been a tireless advocate for the children of the incarcerated. He's a gruff, friendly plumber who saw first hand the impact being imprisoned had on his own kids.

Utah Arts Festival: Utah Short Film of the Year program

Every year, the Utah Arts Festival offers only one official event that provides air-conditioned respite from the summer heat. And every year, it seems that it provides just as much aesthetic cool as physical cool.

Movie Reviews: The Shallows, Independence Day: Resurgence, Free State of Jones, Neon Demon

Earnest Civil War drama, alien invasion, a horror film about fashion modeling and a bikini-clad woman vs. a shark: Yep, it's quite a variety at the movies this weekend. Director Jaume Collet-Serra delivers terrific stripped-down suspense (and that doesn't just refer to star Blake Lively) in the survival thriller The Shallows (pictured).

Landmark Telemarketing Case Casts Shadow Over Mayoral Candidate

Millcreek candidate says he was not involved in employer's vast illegal activity.
Between 2007 and 2010, a Utah telemarketing firm called Feature Films for Families made more than 117 million illegal calls to consumers—an allegation that the company was convicted of on May 25 by a federal jury and has put a mayoral candidate in Millcreek on the defensive. During the time of the illegal phone calls, which carry a maximum fine of $16,000 per phone call and could lead to a $1 trillion settlement, Fred Healey, one of nine candidates facing off in the June 28 primary election, was chief operating officer and chief financial officer at Feature Films for Families.

The cavalcade of gaming that is E3 took place last week. If you're a gamer and didn't know, you should probably step away from the controller for an hour, and go see all the hype and trailers.

June Gallery Stroll: Arcadia Industries

A look at the latest hotspot to join Salt Lake Gallery Stroll.
Last week's Salt Lake Gallery Stroll was a beast with the weather. It got so hot, I had to escape halfway through the evening; I popped over to the Watchtower Cafe and snagged a cold drink while Heather Mahler was on display.

Monday Meal: Cooking Basmati Rice

Last week I shared a recipe for comedian/actor Aziz Ansari's favorite chicken korma recipe - his mother's. This week I thought I'd post my favorite recipe for making basmati rice, which is a typical korma accompaniment.

SaltAir Cycles

A look into the cyclocross bikes coming from this SLC shop.
If you haven't had the chance to check out a cyclocross race, you might kick out of the competition. These races are usually held in the colder months (originally in Western Europian countries and then catching on hard in the U.S. in the '60s), with long obstacle courses involving heavy-duty bikes and racers carrying their cycles through sections and then speeding through the hard terrain.
