Low-budget horror and Jason Statham kick-assery comes to local theaters, along with the First Couple's first date.

Southside With You (pictured) dramatizes the first date between Barack Obama and his future wife Michelle Robinson, but can't dodge the inherent perils of its premise. The Intervention gives great material to its cast in a Big Chill-ish reflection on romantic disillusionment . The perhaps-too-obvious double-meaning of the title Equity—focusing on challenges facing women in the cutthroat world of high finance—but there are enough keen observations for the slick drama to work.

Eric D. Snider praises the satisfying meat-and-potatoes horror of Don't Breathe.

Andrew Wright finds Statham's Mechanic: Resurrection a dull action movie that's mostly noise, squibs and sweaty henchmen.

Also opening this week, but not screened for press: the animated sequel Space Dogs: Adventure to the Moon.
