Waking Up to a Prom Queen: Kapix EP
Hot damn! Maybe you’re not a morning person. Perhaps you’re averse to the sound of loud rock ‘n’ roll when you’ve just rolled outta bed. Especially on a Monday. I get it.

You just spent a weekend having fun, or meeting obligations you couldn’t complete from Monday to Friday, and now you gotta work. You’ve got a surplus of fatigue and a dearth of motivation, and you’re trying to count scoops of java, knowing you still have to endure Mr. Coffee’s agonizingly slow drip before you get that much-needed jolt. Even if you love big, dumb guitar riffs with all your heart, it’s just counter-intuitive. Maybe it’s better to gently coax a soothing tone from your Tibetan singing bowl and breathe until the coffee’s done. Or perhaps rock ‘n’ roll is the answer.

Today, on impulse, I pulled out my smartphone, fired up Spotify and played Prom Queen, the debut EP from local trio Kapix. I could’ve waited until later, but it just felt right. From the opening bars of “Are You Coming or Not,” it was clearly a good move. I was instantly awake, my mind alive with references from Motörhead to AC/DC to New Wave of British Heavy Metal to Supagroup, playing air guitar and already dreading the end of the eight-track set. I pumped it up to full volume, then set my phone in my singing bowl to amplify it. I’m now on a third play-through, and still stoked. Goddamn, it’s hot (the music and the coffee spilled on my keyboard and Pink Floyd pajama pants).

There’s not always space to include every great show happening during the week, even if it’s yet another plug of local jazz-blues badass Joe McQueen playing the Excellence in the Community concert series. Moving closer and closer to his 100th birthday, McQueen is still lifting hefty dumbbells daily, driving himself around town, working at a bar and playing around 10 gigs a month. Those are shows you should see every chance you get. Plus, this Excellence show isn’t at the Gallivan Center. It’s gonna be at the Holladay City Hall Park at 4580 S. 2300 East. Showtime is 8 p.m. and, as always, Excellence concerts are free and open to all ages.

Tolchock Tease: Trio Returning to SLC in August
Here’s something to look forward to: the return of beloved local rockers Tolchock Trio. When the band called it a day in 2013, it broke the hearts of many in the SLC music scene who’d adored the quartet (irony noted) since they debuted in 2000. On Aug. 4, they return to The Urban Lounge. Details to come.
