Crazy-ass psychodrama makes an unlikely multiplex appearance, while art house offerings include gay coming-of-age romance and autobiographical drama by a legendary director.

Darren Aronofsky's mother! (pictured) indulges the director's penchant for craziness in an eventually-exhausting allegory about ... something. Beach Rats explores a closeted Brooklyn youth's heartbreaking attempts to understand his own sexuality. Alejandro Jodorowsky explores his own artistic youth in Chile in the visual striking Endless Poetry.

MaryAnn Johanson finds lessons for contemporary political and nationalist divisions in Viceroy's House as it explores the 1947 India/Pakistan partition.

In this week's feature review, gritty geopolitics mixes awkwardly with ersatz James Bond in the espionage action thriller American Assassin.
