Movie Reviews: American Made, Battle of the Sexes, Year by the Sea, The Unknown Girl

Two fact-based stories share multiplex screens with a remake-quel to a 1990s cult favorite, and the Dardenne brothers bring another great moral character study to the art house.
Jean-Luc and Pierre Dardenne turn the impact of one good woman on others into the fascinating moral drama of The Unknown Girl. Empowerment cliches and twinkly photography aren't enough to support Karen Allen's performance in the adaptation of Joan Anderson's coming-of-middle-age memoir Year by the Sea.
MaryAnn Johanson appreciates the style in American Made (pictured), with Tom Cruise as pilot-turned-international criminal mastermind Barry Seal, but wonders if the style makes the corruption too palatable.
In this week's feature review, MaryAnn Johanson praises how Battle of the Sexes captures the lurching pace of social progress.
