Magic, theater, comedy and more: There's always too much entertainment in a Utah week for one print paper to contain. This is Beyond Essentials.
If you dig the premise of a theatrical performance of illusionist all-stars from the popular Now You See Me films, get a load of the real thing when England's Champions of Magic make their first-ever tour of the U.S. Alex McAleer, Edward Hilsum, Fay Presto and the team of Young & Strange (pictured) bring their amazing trickery to the Rose Wagner Center (138 W. 300 South) Nov. 9, 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $37, available here.
A unique new circus experience comes to life locally as The Petite Palace makes its debut this month with two very different shows: the family-friendly Wonderland, and the after-hours burlesque The Princess Wendy Late-Nite Show. All performances take place at the Utah Arts Alliance (663 W. 100 South), with performances Nov. 9-11 at 7:30 p.m. and matinees Nov. 11-12 at 2 p.m. for Wonderland ($18-$22), and Nov. 10-11 at 9:30 p.m. for Princess Wendy ($15).
Brand-new 10-minute plays by local playwrights—some staged readings, some full productions—get a showcase in the New Works Theater Festival at the Mercury Theater in Provo (591 S. 300 West), Nov. 15-18.
Westminster College Theatre presents Bruce Norris' Pulizer- and Tony Award-winning play Clybourne Park, an insightful comedy-drama set in one house with events separated by 50 years: a white neighborhood reacting to the first black family moving in, and a black family confronting the impact of gentrification. Performances run Nov. 9-11 and 16-18 at Jewett Center for the Arts Courage Theatre (1840 S. 1300 East), 7:30 p.m. nightly, $10 general admission.
The 22nd installment of local PechaKucha Night comes to the State Room (638 S. State) on Friday, Nov. 10, 7 p.m. The "20 images x 20 seconds each" format features presenters from Huntsman Cancer Institute, National American Tongan Association, University of Utah StrokeNet and the Urban Indian Center. Tickets are free but reservations are recommended.
Comedian Doug Benson returns to Wiseguys Gateway (194 S. 400 West, 801-532-5233) with a live recording of his Doug Loves Movies podcast on Saturday, Nov. 11. Showtime is—appropriately enough for the subject of Super High Me—4:20 p.m.; tickets are $20, available here.
