Movie Reviews: The Lighthouse, Dolemite Is My Name, Black and Blue, Countdown

Paradise Hills, The Current War, Where's My Roy Cohn?
Black and Blue ** Earnest social consciousness and gritty exploitation thriller make for an awkward pairing in this story of Alicia West (Naomie Harris), a rookie African-American New Orleans cop who captures a crooked narcotics officer (Frank Grillo) on her body-cam in the act of murdering someone, then has to run for her life from her own colleagues to preserve the evidence. Peter A. Dowling’s screenplay sets up the promising notion of West as an outsider now in the rough neighborhood where she grew up, having to earn back the trust of her old friends after choosing the side they perceive as the enemy.

Theater Review: Salt Lake Acting Company's FORM OF A GIRL UNKNOWN

World premiere play explores the dark edges of coming-of-age.
Amali Wilson (Amanda Morris) announces herself as “12 and three-quarters years old” in Form of a Girl Unknown—and that’s the kind of wonderful shorthand that allows playwright Charly Evon Simpson to let us know the precarious border between childhood and adulthood where Amali stands.

Movie Reviews: Maleficent 2, Zombieland: Double Tap, Becoming Nobody

Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool
Becoming Nobody **1/2 Director Jamie Catto clearly considers himself a student of spiritual teacher Ram Dass, a point of view generating a documentary that’s unusual both for the better and for the worse. There’s no attempt at cradle-to-grave narrative exploring how the American-born psychologist (né Richard Alpert) graduated from psychedelic experimentation with Timothy Leary to learning at the feet of Neem Karoli Baba in India.

Trump Talk

Stormy Daniels slays hecklers and dishes on Donald Trump during SLC appearance.
Sitting in a chair near the stage to see Stormy Daniels at Metro Music Hall Tuesday night, I didn’t have much trouble figuring out who in the audience came for the politics, and who came for the porn.

Movie Review: Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Thematic ambition gets lost in the need to deliver fantasy spectacle
It’s a sneaky-clever, and possibly misleading, bit of business to give the Maleficent sequel the sub-title Mistress of Evil. After all, wasn’t the horned fairy (Angelina Jolie) redeemed in 2014’s Maleficent, transformed by her love for Aurora (Elle Fanning), the princess/adopted daughter she had sworn in a fit of vengeful rage to put to sleep forever?
