The combination of loose narrative and hidden-camera pranking—á la Borat or Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa—is mostly dependent on the creativity and reaction footage involved in the latter. That’s part of the frustration with this movie in which two Florida pals—Chris (Eric Andre) and Bud (Lil Rel Howery)—drive to New York so Chris can connect with the girl he’s had an unrequited crush on since high school.

The appeal of a “lone crusader for justice” narrative is undeniable, but this adaptation of a fact-based story centers that idea to the detriment of all the messiness that could make it most compelling.

It’s a saga worthy, I suppose, of a four-hour epic: The movie that was taken from the hands of its creator, in the midst of his personal tragedy, and Frankenstein’d into something that was destined not to be satisfying to anybody.

If you’re going to make a historical epic, you need to commit to making a historical epic, and not expect that the scope of what you’re trying to do can be captured in 100 minutes. This adaptation of Simon Mawer’s novel The Glass Room following two best friends—Liesel (Hanna Alström) and Hana (Carice van Houten)—in Czechoslovakia spanning 30-plus years from the run-up to World War II through the Prague Spring of 1968, often connected to the stunning home commissioned by Liesel’s wealthy husband (Claes Bang).
