Film Reviews: New Releases for Feb. 24

Cocaine Bear, Emily, Jesus Revolution, We Have a Ghost and more
2023 Oscar-Nominated Documentary Shorts *** It’s a solid bunch of nominees in a category where most viewers haven’t seen any of them, but the one at the top is an absolute knockout. There’s a well-intentioned but incomplete effort in Joshua Seftel’s Stranger at the Gate, exploring a 2009 hate-crime-that-almost was in a story that takes some unusual and heartwarming turns, but seems to require more than half an hour to really provide its desired emotional gut punch.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Sharper, Close, Of An Age and more
2023 Oscar Nominated Animated Shorts **** What an embarrassment of riches in this category, where every one of the five would be a worthy winner. The Flying Sailor—based on the true story of the survival of a Canadian sailor caught in the explosion of a TNT-carrying cargo ship—employ a terrific mix of stop-motion, conventional animation and live-action snippets to capture a life-passing-before-your eyes experience that takes on cosmic dimensions.

Magic Mike's Last Dance, Your Place or Mine, Somebody I Used to Know
Magic Mike’s Last Dance **1/2 Each of the previous installments in the Magic Mike franchise had its own unique vibe—2012’s original as a look at Great Recession-era economic realities, and 2015’s Magic Mike XXL as a hang-out road picture—so it’s no surprise to see this latest entry taking another new turn. It’s just kind of a bummer to see that turn amount to nothing more than “dancing sure can be hot, right?” Mike Lane (Channing Tatum) is now working as an event bartender after the failure of his furniture business, but he connects with Max Mendoza (Salma Hayek Pinault), a wealthy soon-to-be-divorcée who invites him back to London for a mysterious business opportunity.

Knock at the Cabin, 80 for Brady, Saint Omer, Baby Ruby, The Amazing Maurice
80 for Brady *1/2 It’s a perfectly fine idea to put a bunch of veteran actors in a movie together and let them play off of one another—in which case, it might be a good idea if you actually let them play off of one another. Set in 2017, it follows four long-time Boston-area friends—Lou (Lily Tomlin), Trish (Jane Fonda), Maura (Rita Moreno) and Betty (Sally Field)—who resolve to head to the Super Bowl in Houston, where their beloved Tom Brady (playing himself) is leading the New England Patriots.
