Director Roger Ross Williams has had a long, successful career as a documentary filmmaker, and it’s hard not to feel that this biopic based on the life of lucha libre wrestler Saúl “Cassandro” Armendáriz (Gael García Bernal) would have been much more compelling in non-fiction form. The story begins with the openly-gay Saúl working small-time wrestling gigs across the border from his El Paso home, struggling to gain a foothold.
