I suppose I'm one of the few critics who will not see Seven, David Fincher's film about a serial killer who murders according to the seven deadly sins. That's right. I refuse to go. I don't care that it remains at the top of the box office charts or that it is getting favorable reviews as "the year's No. 1 thriller."
The thousands of films made since 1893 have provided a remarkable record of American life and culture. Unfortunately, more than half the movies produced in this country before 1951 have deteriorated and are lost forever.
Too many people have continued to suffer in the years since I wrote that story, and too many others have forgotten—or never knew—about the long trail of death left in the wake of four decades of weapons tests and production.
