The future of art looks bright indeed, at least for artists using found materials. In 2008, the 337 Project art truck featured artists Dan Steinhilber and Maggie Michael, based in Washington, D.C., and known for their use of found objects. This month, Los Angeles sculptor and painter Walpa D’Mark presents his cardboard and mixed-media sculptures that have a real West Coast style.

Pieces constructed from lightbulbs, color swatches, gifts, foam, duct tape, light fixtures, books and cardboard combine in interpretive schema of figurative theological symbols and playful abstraction. He brings psychedelic and Latin American themes in his paintings, and the two mediums share a dialectic of hope and doubt, where hope for the future means trust that there will be one. Pieces from D’Mark’s work premiered March 12 at Livingroom’s new space in the basement of the Peery Hotel downtown, to open officially in April.

A Bright Future: Sculptures by Walpa D’Mark, @ The Livingroom Gallery, 2105 E. Fardown Ave., 505-228-1268, through March 27
