Spring is a transitional time, typified by newness: new buds, new fashions, a new season. Allison Barr’s window installations at FICE, unveiled during the April 16 Gallery Stroll, are right on time.

The blown-up photos and corresponding sets are fresh on many levels; a keen blend of fashion photography and artsy staging that feels like something new for the city. These mini-scenes in the storefront stop just short of feeling merely like advertisements.

After the initial allure and the jolt of taking them in, you start to see the details. In the left display, the model, holding a confrontational gaze and stance, is actually squirting an enema under her leg and onto an adjacent mirror. Both the bathroom in the picture and the physical display are adorned with them. The window on the right, with the model in an exuberant power-pose and covered in alphabet refrigerator magnets, is unabashedly fun, fluorescent and looks like it’s straight from a fashion spread—with a twist. The neon, Navajo pattern on a Styrofoam cooler seems to say it all. Certainly worth a walk-by.
