The (a)perture Gallery is one of those art spaces in Salt Lake City that you might drive past and not notice. But its location illustrates a growing trend of putting art into neighborhoods—not just cloistered in the downtown “art district.” The nonprofit establishment has also been part of bringing attention to emerging artists who otherwise might not be seen. The gallery’s space was formerly a residence and has the cozy feeling of a house with art on the walls, making it easier to get intimate with art. This is its third annual local showcase—one barometer of the local art scene.

Despite the gallery’s name, it doesn’t focus on photography but expands its lens to a variety of media. This year’s exhibit will emphasize process as art and will include fashion design, photography, sculpture, multimedia and oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, in addition to graphite drawings and recycled glass art.

More than 20 artists are creating some of the most exciting new local artwork in recent memory. The fused glass pieces by Amber Debirk become items that almost transcend their medium. Paintings by Todd Powelson utilize comic-book action heroes as characters. Ryan Peterson’s sculptures and character designs take on unusual subjects—like aliens and Chris Buttars (Peterson’s “Player 2” is pictured). The show also includes the photography of gallery owners Anne Cummings-Anderson and Heidi Gress.

Join the opening reception, featuring musical performances by local singer songwriter Pablo Blaqk and indie pop ensemble Bicycle Voice.

(a)perture Local Artists Showcase @ (a)perture Gallery, 1617 S. 900 East, 801-953-0109, Aug. 28-Sept 27. Reception Aug. 28, 6-10 p.m.
