Vivid imagery and inspiring athleticism meet, once again, at the 35th annual Banff Film Festival, hosted by the University of Utah’s Outdoor Recreation Program. Chosen from thousands of outdoor films, this three-day event, featuring nearly 20 films—each from five minutes to one hour—takes viewers deep into uncharted territory whether it’s new peaks, Russian tundra or the human psyche.

Take WildWater (pictured, showing Thursday): in 25 rapid minutes, it offers a glimpse of the mindset of white-water kayakers who navigate deathly risk for sheer adrenaline. Or check out photographer Murray Fredericks’ journey into isolation—physically and mentally—in Australia’s remote Lake Eyre in Salt (showing Wednesday), recipient of the Banff Centre Award for Creative Excellence. Each night boasts more than two hours of films in two acts.

On March 3, the Banff best-of-the-best showcase, “Radical Reels,” will be a more condensed evening of visual bliss.
