“Take off your thinking caps; I’m about to make it fucking stupid in here.” The first line on Brian Posehn’s new stand-up album, Fart and Weiner Jokes, may be the perfect summation of his act most of the time—and that’s exactly what makes it hilarious.

Posehn, a self-proclaimed comic-book geek and metalhead, comes from the same school of comedy that spawned David Cross and Patton Oswalt. He still tours almost perpetually, doing what he loves—traveling from city to city, making people laugh at his inane rants about iTunes insulting his music taste, cuddling with his wife or party-bus strippers. It doesn’t matter whether the venue is Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, a huge theater in San Diego or regular old comedy clubs (like Wiseguys), he’s out there peddling his unique brand of dick jokes to the masses.

His new album, released through Relapse Records, contains more of the same humor he displayed on his excellent first album, Live In: Nerd Rage. It’s comedy aimed at those who still love Dio and Star Trek but actually have a sense of humor about it. Lately, he’s been all over the place, writing for The Sarah Silverman Program and Metalocalypse, and taking bit roles in horror films.

He’s never had a huge HBO special and will probably never reach the status achieved by Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle or—God help us all—Dane Cook. But Posehn’s self-deprecating humor is on full display, and the man has never been funnier.

Brian Posehn @ Wiseguys Trolley Square, 505 S. 600 East, 801-532-5233, Aug. 13-14, 7:30 & 10 p.m., $20. WiseguysComedy.com
