Church at Piper Down
Emancipation from regular church service is now a reality. “Church,” also known as karaoke Sundays at Piper Down (1492 S. State), is less traditional, but everyone drinks “communion” and offers praise via hymns from well-known balladeers like Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand. (Insert your own jokes about “keeping the Sabbath holy,” and “The Rock Church” here.) Wednesdays also find patrons giving praise midweek after Geeks Who Drink. Two days a week of karaoke is great for any club, and Piper Down has the stage to really make your interpretations and praises reach the heavens.

Piano Bar Primer
There’s a reason that the greatest songs ever made were penned on a piano. “Pianos are the best instruments in the world, bro.” I believe Handel said that. He’s a little too old school, though, and many music fans appreciate renditions of Lady GaGa and Billy Joel on the ivories these days. Two places in town are well known for that—the appropriately named Keys On Main (242 S. Main) and The Tavernacle (201 E. 300 South). Both are full-service bars and offer witty banter along with great tunes.

Garages and Sheds
If you’re looking for something different than revival-church karaoke night and piano bars, step over to the Woodshed (60 E. 800 South). Reggae, live local music and their own version of karaoke that doesn’t suck round out a great, relaxed schedule.

If you have the bad luck of needing a stiff drink in North Salt Lake, look to the Old Yellowstone Garage (1199 Beck St.). Formerly Club Jimax and under new management, this bar is a great place to get out of the hustle and bustle of downtown and relax.
