Will write for food: To celebrate its 30th anniversary, Sweet Tomatoes is looking to find and reward its “most remarkable patrons.” As such, guests are invited to draft a 200-word essay describing why they or someone they know (Me! Me! Me!) is remarkable, using a story or anecdote related to Sweet Tomatoes. (Remember the time I spilled the curried yellow split pea soup on your pretty party dress?) The 30 Remarkable Guests contest runs through the month of July and will be judged by Sweet Tomatoes’ Kitchen Cabinet advisory panel, made up of 10 influential moms from around the country. Winners will receive complimentary meals at Sweet Tomatoes. For more information, go to SweetTomatoes.com.

Red Rock Brewing Company came away from the 2008 North American Beer Awards (NABA) with three medals. More than 1,000 brews from the USA, Mexico and Canada were judged at NABA and when the suds cleared Red Rock took home a gold medal for their Bamberg Rauch Bier, a silver for German Pilsner and a bronze medal for Bohemian Pilsner. Personally, I’ve never met anyone with a better knowledge of and appreciation for wine than Vine Lore Inc.’s Gus Magann. Apparently, I’m not alone in that notion. Utah’s own Magann was selected to be a member of the judging panel for this summer’s 2008 California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition, largely regarded as the “best wine competition in the West.” In order to be selected, Gus passed a rigorous wine judge’s exam administered through UC Davis and proved consistency and success in the blind evaluation of wines. Way to go, Gus!

Utah-based My Girlfriend’s Kitchen has been sold to The Dinner A’fare. As a way of saying “Goodbye, Girlfriend,” My Girlfriend’s Kitchen locations through the end of June are offering a special: Order 12 meals and you’ll get a 13th free, plus a free dessert.

Quote of the week: I went to a restaurant that serves “breakfast at any time.” So I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance. —Steven Wright
