There are typically two visions of Africa: One that imagines the grace and dignity of tribes living in nature and another that focuses on the struggle for survival and impoverishment of indigenous people living in harsh environments. Which is true?
Dr. Wilma Johnson could attest to the validity of both conceptions. She earned a Ph.D. in International Village Development and has been working with native peoples of Africa and other countries for 20 years. She founded a grass-roots organization called Tribal Advancement, which has worked closely with the Samburu tribes people of Kenya, whose traditional semi-nomadic way of life became unsustainable after colonialism.
Johnson will speak about her work with the Samburu, including projects to improve the lives of the tribe’s men and women through education, infrastructure development and economic opportunities. She also will address the pressing question of whether it is possible to integrate traditional cultures with Western ways of life.
