The Book Arts Program at the University of Utah’s Marriott Library features a stellar staff of several local printmakers and is full of tools to facilitate many of their wonderful works. As a group that frequently meets outside of the workplace and has access to equipment that many artists envy, it seems about time they had a show.
Signed & Numbered is the obvious venue choice. Impressed?! the show title, punctuated by an interrobang—an obscure and fitting move for a group presumably concerned with typefaces and marks.
The exhibition—with work by Becky Thomas- Williams, Laura Decker, Marnie Powers-Torrey, Elizabeth Smith, Claire Taylor, Amber Heaton, Mary Toscano, David Wolske and Allison Cornu—is not focused solely on books, although there are some; you can also look forward to letterpress and other types of prints and drawings.
“It’s basically what each of us would do as artists individually, but we all happen to work together,” says Taylor—and all participants seem to have found their way to the program and stayed, because they actively make art and have an aptitude for perfection.
David Wolske offers graphic, text-focused works that, like the show title itself, bring modern shorthand and acronyms into the gallery. Taylor showcases her usual excellent animal narrative prints and drawings, and Decker is along a similar thread subject-wise with the quirky “Hey Kitty, Don’t Eat That!.” What they all share is immaculate assembly and execution and a certain love for their past or present experience at the Book Arts Program.
