ART OF KANLY 6-Song EP
Former members of Sherlock, Hammergun, Gabriel and Veteran’s Grove rattle bones with a 6-song EP straight out of all-ages hardcore shows circa 1997. Track 1, let’s call it “Bend Over,” sets the board for a set of hernia-inducing numbers heavy on cathartic gutturals and pummeling guitars. The quintet digs up the past, paying tribute to bands they teethed on (Danzig, Snapcase, Converge), and spits it out like yesterday’s trash'welcome piles of earplugs, throat spray and sweat-stained hoodies. nnFISCH Fisch Loops
nnDave Fischer, once linked to hip-hop collective The Numbs and hip-hop/trip-hop duo Furthermore, dishes out samples sweeter and tighter than a box of Red Vines. The inventive MC/DJ threads bits of lo-fi soul, funk and disco with Sesame Street sound bytes. Cookie Monster, Grover, Big Bird, Bert, Maria and others set the tone for tunes shifting seamlessly across glad and sad emotions. “You know how your feelings can kind of change around? I kind of feel sad now,” Ernie says. You know, Fisch Loops kind of feels solid.
nnDREW DANBURRY Besides …
nnWhile “Red Rock Virgin’s Encounter With Winter Nights” echoes Smog’s “Our Anniversary,” remaining tracks off Besides: Are We Just Playing Around Here or Do We Mean What We Say, are as unique, refreshing and enthusiastic as their maker. Danburry whispers nostalgic confessions of love and hope in atonal vocals just this side of Stephen Malkmus. Backed by a slew of contributors’ voices, handclaps and tuba-playing skills, the innovative singer-songwriter comes off as that persistent kid who keeps pushing for a date'then actually turns out to be pretty amazing. nnSTACEY BOARD Hybrid
nnThis material, pulled from past albums and live shows, highlights Board’s evolution as a now-fearless artist. The skydiving singer-songwriter once won City Weekly readers’ hearts, earning her a three-year reign as Best Folk/Acoustic act. Hybrid reaffirms past praises, cherry-picking tunes that define Board’s confident vocals and introspective lyrics neither cliché nor sappy. “You’re pretty as a picture now shut up,” she sings on “Invisible Girl.” Oh, Stacey, don’t you ever shut up. nnAFTER THE PARTY When You’re All Alone You Forget Everything You Know
nnColoring books aren’t just child’s play. At least that’s the message Ogden’s After the Party send with their sweet fill-in-the-blank word searches, crossword puzzles and random drawings of spaceships and spacemen in space. Masa, Tommy and Beth maintain a similar sense of playfulness on When You’re All Alone, plunking out songs driven by choppy piano and lighthearted guitar melodies. If you hate the Carpenters, this isn’t for you. If you dig something soft now and then, give this trio a try. (AftertheParty.us)
