Possibly the most well-known story involving danse orientale comes straight from the big book itself. It’s the wholesome tale where Salome—aiming to whip her uncle Herod into an incestuous frenzy in order to get him to grant her John the Baptist’s head on a platter—dances the evocative dance of the seven veils.

That duality of skill and sensuality is a hallmark of the genre—and although we all know that Utah is a dance haven, it’s still a bit odd that this state has become a hub for all things danse orientale. As such, the annual Meeting of the Tribes, a festive gathering of enthusiasts, teachers and students of the form, grows more entertaining with every passing year. This time around, the assembly will be an additional hour longer and will feature the largest number of dance troupes from around the state the meeting has ever seen—with special musical guest artists Kairo By Night (pictured).
