Hey, readers! You wanna experience the glitz and glamour of freelance arts journalism? City Weekly is looking for freelance music writers to contribute interview-based narrative features, essays and event previews in exchange for cold, hard cash and having your byline published in Utah's scrappiest publication. Ideal candidates have experience writing about music for other publications. Unpublished writers who are serious about their craft are also welcome. If you’ve contacted us within the last six months, there is no need to resubmit. We have your information and will be in touch if we’re interested.

If you haven't, please peruse these submission guidelines and send a brief cover letter along with writing samples to City Weekly A&E Editor Scott Renshaw scottr@cityweekly.net.

Experienced music writers: In addition to the Q&A please submit three writing samples (via links or attachments), including:

• One interview-based narrative feature.

• One concert preview or review, album review or music-related film review.

• The third sample is candidate’s choice: Q&A, essay, humor piece, anything—even if it’s not music-related.

• Are you a published writer, but haven’t written about music? Go ahead and answer the Q&A, then submit three samples of your choice.

New writers: In addition to the Q&A, please submit a 250-word review of the album of your choice. This is a sample only—it will not be considered for publication and is uncompensated.

Note: We get many queries from inexperienced writers who offer to review concerts in exchange for free tickets and photo passes. City Weekly focuses on upcoming events, which means that we rarely publish concert reviews and therefore have no need for this content.

Workload: Workload varies. Almost all new writers will start with concert previews (150-250 words) in our Live column, but scribes with good feature samples might start with the main music feature (750-850 words). Occasionally, there will be additional work for special issues. Frequency and quantity of assignments is based on performance.
