MUSIC ON MAIN Left out in the cold during Sundance? Tonight’s your chance to attend an all-star event'no press badges or celebrity status required. Festival organizers lassoed a few game contestants for public consumption, including Robbers on High Street, DJ Wildestyle and Brazilian Girls. Producing smooth, transcontinental tracks for the nightclub set, Brazilian Girls’ infectious grooves blend Latin beats with New York street-smarts and universal acid-jazz dreams. DJ SWAMP In the past, everyone wanted to be a celebrity. Now, every celebrity wants to be a DJ. It seems, however, that most of these would-be turntablists underestimate their role on the ones and twos. Respectable DJs do more than just flip records'they manipulate, coddle and destroy them. DJ Swamp crushed his vinyl like a blazing guitar in his first DMC victory. This rock-star moment followed a mind-blowing set during which Swamp put his trademark touch on Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water.” In future performances, he tried his hand at Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” using an LP loaded with individual guitar chords. OUR TIME IN SPACE CD RELEASE Local math-rockers Our Time in Space set their sights on the final frontier. Their online bio scrolls upwards, detailing in Star Wars-like fashion the history of three “human beings” who joined forces to revolutionize post-prog rock via epic, free-jazz jams. Rough mixes from recording sessions with engineer Jud Powell are tripped-out, technical and dreamy. Check the final cut when OTIS releases their hyped full-length tonight. CAKE It’s been a decade since Cake released Fashion Nugget, the album that brought us such poptastic gems as “Daria,” “The Distance,” and the great Gloria Gaynor cover “I Will Survive.” While Cake indeed survived, subsequent efforts came up short of perfection. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps the group spends too much time blogging about current events. Maybe they just need to find a balance'a place where John McCrea’s deadpan vocals can channel ironic observations after he posts online reports about good ol’ boys and nukes. JOHN FLANDERS & DOUBLE HELIX CD RELEASE Naturally, local saxman John Flanders has some of Salt Lake City’s hottest jazz musicians wailing on his latest Double Helix CD, Natural Selection (JohnFlanders.com). But how’s this for a special fly-in guest: Bassist Will Lee of David Letterman’s Late Show band and session man to the stars? Lee holds down and tears up the bottom of “Isobar,” one of 11 tight new original tracks ripping through jazz sub-genres like sharks gnawing mackerel'this ain’t “smooth jazz.” He won’t be on hand for Natural Selection’s release party, but Flanders & Double Helix will have it more than covered. BLUES-A-PALOOZA There are few more natural combinations than Monday, the blues and barbecue, hence the second annual Blues-a-Palooza at Pat’s Barbecue, this year featuring Andrew Goldring & the Rosedale Power Co., Sister Wives, the Legendary Porch Pounders, Jake Dryer & The Pacemakers, Harry Lee & the Back Alley Blues Band and Ides of Soul, all culminating with the Utah Allstar Blues Band Jam. A mere $30 (benefiting KRCL 90.9’s fine blues programming) gets you not only hours of hot blues, but an all-you-can-eat BBQ buffet featuring Pat’s killer spread. DONNA THE BUFFALO When Tara Nevins went electric, there were no cries of Judas. Unlike Bob Dylan, the seasoned fiddle player, who somewhat reluctantly amplified her traditional Appalachian roots when Donna the Buffalo expanded, wasn’t linked to any heated social movements when she first plugged in. Nineteen years later, devout followers, known fondly as “the herd,” welcome the eclectic group’s reggae-zydeco-blues-folk mash-up at any volume. Their latest album, Life’s a Ride, features more of the same solid jams that garnered them such diehard supporters, including Jeb Puryear sharing duties on the mic with his Van Morrison-on-a-three-week-bender vocals. AN ANGLE Forget all your worries with An Angle, an anomaly on Drive-Thru Records whose melodic songs are neither emo nor punk. “Just dance it off,” singer Kris Anaya suggests in their video for “Green Water,” as the camera follows around colorful paper-mache fishheads. The Sacramento, Calif.-based band writes bouncy ditties rich in metaphor, double entendres and, thanks to Anaya’s obsession with Charles Bukowski, references to alcohol. So dance? Or drink to forget?
