Portia Early, X96 weekend DJ and host of Live & Local (Sundays, 8-10 p.m.), wants to tell you about three more of her favorite Utah bands and songs:
Mutton Hollow “Love Story”
Davis County screamo boys Day Two originally got their start at the 2003 X96 Big Ass Show, then seemingly fell off the face of the Earth in 2007. Well, if you liked what you heard then, you now can find three of the original members in Mutton Hollow, with Day Two guitarist/vocalist Sheldon Priest, drummer Swiz and guitarist Johnny B plus newcomer Chase, on bass. I am so proud of this group. They’ve managed to evolve past early Hawthorne Heights-influence with a decidedly more mature sound. “Love Story” is an especially gut-wrenching, grown-up track with amazing harmonies. *Sniff* my boys are growing up! Estrago “To Live and Die by the Sword”
Now, I’m not just into Estrago because one of their members is a tattoo artist for Good Times Tattoo (owner Vic touched up my cat tat). However, along with the cool eye candy, this SL,UT quartet deftly blends metal riffs with harsh harmonies without sounding like your average hardcore band. It’s metal-meets-fantasy. The lyrics (when audible) are creative and passionate. Despite their gruff exterior, I actually relate to and empathize with their incredible songwriting. It’s imaginative music to mosh to. Danger Mouth “Throw YOUR HaNDS Up”
Hey kids, it’s clean, fun rap! In a similar vein to but not quite as comical as my fabulous friends the Rotten Musicians, this is just good, straight expletive-free old-school hip-hop. Which is good for X96 Live & Local, when I am assured I can play any of the fun, danceable tracks without worrying about F-bombs. Mouth still comes clean correct with catchy beats and lyrics, and I bet you can bring the whole fam to one of his shows. I was particularly impressed with his showmanship and insatiable energy. Yes, it may seem simple, but you’ll leave after a DM show with a spring in yo step. I love this project. Go Danger.
