It’s hard to imagine what it takes to gain membership into a vaudeville troupe with the evocative name “Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad.” By their own account, this group of outspoken ladies learned their bad behaviors young—smoking behind Hebrew school, sneaking drinks at their own bat mitzvahs and striving more for schtupp than chuppa during those awkward teenage years.

The leader of these lost Jewish princesses, comedian Goddess Perlman, notes that this variety show is trying to single-handedly redefine Jewish entertainment by challenging stereotypes while simultaneously promoting Jewish pride. The show is geared toward each venue and audience, so one night might focus on schticky musical numbers such as “The Gefilte Fish Song” and “Hava Nagila Go-Go”, while other, more adult evenings could easily lean toward burlesque with just enough raunchiness to make you feel a twinge of that good ol’ Jewish guilt. Yep, NJGGB aims at getting the chosen people to laugh out loud at their quirky selves, with a little bit of the dirty stuff thrown in for good measure.

With a revolving door of more than 30 participants, each show presents a fresh mix of comedy, spoken word, dance and rock, with a possible parody of the great Fiddler on the Roof in the offing. This go-around features Goddess Perlman hosting the talents of author/storyteller Sara Barron (US Aspen Comedy Festival/The Moth), singer/songwriter Naomi Less (Jewish Chicks Rock/Storahtelling) and Second City alum Cynthia Levin.
