For centuries, the traditional way in which artists made their way economically was through patronage, with the most fortunate artists awarded lucrative commissions to create works to order. Since the emergence of democratic governments, the free market has governed art, as everything else, with commissioned works a rarity.
But the Salt Lake Art Center’s Not Just Another Pretty Face is a unique fund-raiser that recreates the lost relationship between artist and art owner, strengthing the local art community and the center‘s mission to bring important art to the state. Potential patrons can meet with artists—this time including Jean Arnold, Doug Braithwaite, Sandy Brunvand and Trent Call— through February and select a subject. Friday’s presentation is the kickoff to a process that will culminate in the unveiling of the works at the center’s annual benefit gala on June 5, 2010.
On December’s early-in-the-month Gallery Stroll, it’s also the center’s Holiday Open House.
