Obama Disappoints

I was utterly shocked that, in the responses to the April 29 Staff Box question [“Has President Obama let you down in any way?” City Weekly], no one mentioned anything specific other than “Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell,”—which he has addressed but has not repealed—and the fulfillment of his promise to send more troops to Afghanistan.

City Weekly’s April 22 cover story examined the efficacy of the American Civil Liberties Union of Utah, yet no one mentioned civil rights. Obama had promised to correct the Patriot Act, but it was renewed without substantial change. He promised to close Guantanamo Bay, and it is still open. Regarding the health-care debate, a singlepayer system was never up for debate, and the final bill didn’t even have a public option.

I support President Obama, but his tactics during the first year in office have been utterly ineffectual, especially considering the supermajority the Democrats had in the Senate. It is only since he and other Democrats have stood up to the mendacity of the far right and their Republican puppet masters that he has not let me down.
