A lot of Salt Lakers don’t get up to Park City enough, especially in the off-ski season. This year, the high-altitude sibling of the Utah Arts Fest turns 40; who knew the resort town’s event had a decade on its better-known counterpart in the valley? Hey, 40 is the new 30, right? And when the place isn’t full of skiiers and filmfestival types, locals may feel like they have more room to move around—although it’s still advisable to park at the outskirts and take a shuttle to the heart of downtown.

More than 200 artists will display their works in painting, photography, ceramics and sculpture; in addition to food, nonalcoholic beverages and beer, Utah Castle Creek Wines will have its own works of art on hand for the oenophile. The 30 live bands on tap are selected by Mountain Town Stages, the pre-eminent establishment for booking shows in the ski town. The art itself tends to be more regional than the Utah Arts Festival’s lineup, with Southwestern styles, and lots of terra cotta and sagebrush scenes. High-end homedecorating items are in abundant supply here, if you’re in the market for a chrome cactus or turquoise turntable.

If that isn’t reason enough, the festival also offers an excuse to escape the city heat.
