The “wow” factor in life is the difference between expectations and experience. Going to Sharon’s Cafe for breakfast at 10 a.m. on a Tuesday, I expected the place to be quiet, with the breakfast crowd having cleared out; my experience was quite different. There were many people there, nearly every table full. Everyone seemed to know each other as they intently solved the problems of the world. It was a locals hangout, for sure—and it was a beautiful sight, even if I felt like an outsider at first.
Sharon’s Cafe serves breakfast and lunch comfort food in an inviting atmosphere. You can get breakfast, lunch or the daily special any time from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Breakfast is an assortment of omelets, pancakes and platters. Lunch is burgers, salads, soups and sandwiches.
I went with Sharon’s Special: marinated pork tenderloin, two eggs, fresh tomato and feta cheese served with home fries, sweet potato home fries or shredded potatoes and your choice of toast. Pork tenderloin for breakfast? Certainly—it was moist, tender, packed with herbs and had a perfect sear. For the side, I had the sweet-potato home fries. They sounded great, and looked like regular potatoes upon arrival. Forgetting that they were sweet potato, I added ketchup. The first bite helped me quickly remember these were not regular potatoes. I removed the ketchup and enjoyed; though they were delicious, I actually had a harder time wrapping my head around sweet potatoes for breakfast than the pork tenderloin.
Sharon and the entire waitrestaff are so attentive; they clearly love their jobs. With all the new construction in Holladay, Sharon’s Cafe may soon be the oldest building there. It does, however, have the most substance—great people and great food. Let’s hope they stick around forever.
