Sub Zero vs. Sharks
In case you missed it, Utah’s own Sub Zero Ice Cream & Yogurt (Multiple locations, SubZeroIceCream.com) was recently featured on ABC’s Shark Tank. I don’t want to spoil the outcome for anyone who didn’t see it; you can find the episode online for streaming. Shark Tank stars billionaire Mark Cuban and his team of “sharks”—investors who have the ability to give small businesses like Sub Zero Ice Cream the big break they’re hoping for. Sub Zero uses liquid nitrogen to create instantly frozen ice cream and yogurt, both dairy and nondairy, at minus-321 degrees Fahrenheit. Flavors run the gamut from cotton candy and piña colada, to Mountain Dew and tiger’s blood, with mix-ins like graham-cracker crust, Snickers, cashews and peaches.
Utah’s Oscar-worthy Caterers
Internationally recognized Catersource Magazine, Conference & Tradeshow has announced 26 finalists for their 2013 Achievement in Catering Excellence (ACE) award, which is sort of the Oscars of catering. Including in the finalists for the ACE award are two Utah caterers: Salt Lake City’s Culinary Crafts and Main Event Catering, based in Lindon. The winners will be announced at the Catersource Conference & Tradeshow on Monday, March 11. Visit Catersource.com for more information.
An Epic Expansion
In a very short time—founders David Cole and Peter Erickson opened Epic Brewery (825 S. State, 801-906-0123, EpicBrewing.com) in 2010—Epic beers have garnered worldwide acclaim, attention and awards. Now, Epic is expanding to Denver, where they’ve leased a spot in Denver’s River North area, at 3001 Walnut St. The plan is to begin producing Epic brews in Denver by late March 2013, and to open a 20-barrel brewhouse and taproom sometime in April. The focus will be on Epic’s barrel-aged Exponential series. Don’t worry, though: Nothing will change at the Salt Lake City Epic Brewery location, except that Epic brewer Kyle Rossman will be heading to Denver. Additional staff will be hired locally. “Epic Brewing is not leaving Salt Lake City,” Cole says. “This is a much-needed expansion to meet demand in the region and our markets farther to the east, which are continuing to grow.”
