Food Pioneers
My buddy Steve Auerbach, director at the nonprofit MusicGarage, alerted me to an interesting business located in the MusicGarage building: Urban Pioneer Foods (389 W. 1700 South, Salt Lake City, 801-557-1752). Run by longtime friends Brooke Woffinden and Ashley Veenendaal, Urban Pioneer Foods offers personal chef services, catering and specialty retail foods. What’s unique about UPF, however, is how far they go to use locally produced, fresh and wholesome foods from local purveyors and farmers. The meals are, literally, often farm-to-table. Gourmet dishes range from baked organic polenta with organic tomato and vegetable ragu, to bahn mi sandwiches with seasonal vegetable-lentil salad. Meals are available by delivery or pick-up from the store. Visit UrbanPioneerFoods.com for more information.

Tooele Brewery
A new locally owned-and-operated brewery and restaurant opened recently in Tooele: Bonneville Brewery, located at 1641 N. Main (formerly Tracks). Owned by Brad Shepherd, the brewery is headed up by former longtime Red Rock brewmaster Eric Dunlap, along with Dave Watson, and the brewery’s kitchen is led by Executive Chef Joe Davis. The unique redesign by Ric Jedrziewski features elements such as a bar made entirely of recycled glass bottles, and two large outdoor patios. Brewery food includes comfort cuisine like burgers, fish & chips and chicken potpie. Currently, the brewery is producing eight classic beer styles and will have four more craft brews by summer. Visit Facebook.com/BonnevilleBrewery for more information.

Texas ’Que
Connoisseurs of Texas-style barbecue will be happy to learn that R&R Barbeque has found a permanent home in Salt Lake City, at 307 W. 600 South. Headed up by brothers Rod and Roger Livingston (hence “R&R”), this barbecue joint specializes in “low and slow” barbecue, the type that has earned the brothers countless awards on the competitive barbecue circuit, including at the Jack Daniels World Championships. Many are familiar with R&R’s incredible beef brisket from catered events, food trucks or barbecue contests. Now, you can enjoy R&R anytime. Well, Monday through Saturday, at least. Visit RAndRBBQ.net or call 801-364-0443 for more information.
