In spring 2008, City Weekly published a feature about local high school students Edward Liu and Michael Young, who decided to take their fascination with Rubik’s Cube “speed-solving” to the big time. So they made contact with the World Cube Association and dotted the appropriate Is and crossed the appropriate Ts to put on a fully sanctioned competition where solving the standard 3x3 Rubik’s Cube in less than 30 seconds is child’s play. Now, with the rookie year under their belt, the organizers are attempting to build a tradition.

Participants from around the West will descend on the University of Utah for a chance to speed-solve the 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5 cubes, among other events. And just for good measure, some of the participants will take on the 3x3 cube onehanded and/or blindfolded. Let your jaw drop in amazement while you still try to get one face the same color.

Utah Cubing Open @ University of Utah Warnock Engineering Building, 72 S. Central Campus Drive, Room 1250, Saturday, April 11, 8:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. UtahCubing.com
