The celebration of Mexican culture does not end after Cinco de Mayo. The Utah Museum of Fine Arts will celebrate the art of Mexico all summer, with the opening of Las Artes de México running through Sept. 26. Salt Lake City’s legendary Pablo O’Higgins’ poignant and historic lithographs are displayed through Sept. 19, and salt 1 opens on May 6 with an exhibition of work by Adriana Lara of Mexico City.
Of the recent projects from regional art venues, salt is one of the most ambitious and promises to be one of the most rewarding. The exhibit features the work of a different emerging contemporary international artist semi-annually, with Lara as the inaugural artist. Exhibit curator Jill Dawsey says the project aims to “infuse Salt Lake City—and especially its artistic community—with new and diverse ideas, fostering conversations between local artists and art lovers and the broader global art world.” She chose Lara because her work is “smart, playful, and slightly irreverent, all of which seemed like the perfect punctuation mark to Las Artes.” Her show consists of 12 installations—Banana Peel (pictured) is simply a banana peel—and four prints. Her work is understood conceptually, and questions parameters of contemporary art and perception.
Lara’s work is representative of Mexico’s energetic and progressive contemporary art scene. May 6 initiates a celebration of that art: past, present and future.
