Yellow Face is a “Comedy of Identity”. It begins with a “What If?” “What if” David Henry Hwang (a character in his own play), in his attempt to write a play protesting “Yellow Face” casting, accidentally cast a Caucasian actor as the Asian-American lead? “What if” that actor so identified with his role that he became a spokesman for Asian-American civil rights? What would DHH, having staked his reputation on the conflation of racial purity with artistic integrity, do to prevent the revelation of his actor’s bloodline? Or, failing in that, how does he deal with the fact that the actor is now more important to his race’s aspirations than he is?
